First, in April, we got the privileged guy who raped a woman while also being graced with the ability to swim really fast. Then, in August, we got the privileged guy who was a vandal in a foreign country, repeatedly lied to police, the media, and his mom, and impugned the entire culture that was hosting him. Well actually we got four of those guys (not sure if the mom part holds for all four). So that's fun.
Anyway, kind of a disgraceful year for dudes of my race representing my first and favorite sport. Not great either for media coverage that would excoriate, say, Black or Latino athletes who engaged in similar conduct and played, I dunno, badminton or some other known-but-still-kind-of-obscure sport. (Other people have explained this better than I can.)
Good thing we still have Katie Ledecky. Would've been even better if sexist IOC bullshit hadn't prevented her from blowing us all away one more time.
